Why 'Showgirl Glamour' Emerged as the Sparkling Look of This Year

After a three-decade stint on the iconic Vegas strip, the showgirls from the revue Jubilee! gave one last choreographed kick in 2016. The show, known for its intricate costumes crafted by style icon Bob Mackie, came to an end due to declining audience numbers and unimpressed reviewers who called it a spectacle “trapped in time”.

Now, nearly ten years later, the showgirl persona, or at least the showgirl style, is making a comeback.

The Master of Sparkle

Dubbed the “king of sparkle”, Mackie has made theatrical showgirl glamour his signature style, dressing everyone from screen legends to pop royalty. In a recent auction, a “see-through” bodysuit he created for Cher in 1978 commanded $57,600, well over its estimated price, while a metallic beaded bodysuit with reflective wings that Mackie designed for Tina Turner for a 1977 performance sold for $19,200.

“I think it looks more enticing for the emerging artists who is desiring something other than what they were accustomed to”, he told a media outlet. “Today's artists are embracing a glamorous, more theatrical, breathtaking, grand statement.”

The Musical Comeback

It’s a look that glided all the way to the centre of popular culture in 2025 thanks to a chart-topping superstar. Earlier this year, the cultural juggernaut wore one of Mackie’s vintage Jubilee! costumes on the cover of her latest record. The bedazzled bra and thong, feathered armbands and shimmering headpiece were ideal for a record called The Life of a Showgirl.

The singer has company. This year, showgirl inspirations have been embraced by singers including Miley Cyrus as they whizzed across concert platforms in glitter, revealing designs and feathers, illuminated against camp sets. A top stylist her creative director explained to a fashion magazine he wanted to bring “a showgirl attitude” to her Radical Optimism tour – inspired by pictures from the 50s, the backup dancers fluttered giant feathered fans.

Pulling from History

These artists and other hitmakers also take inspiration from 19th-century entertainment forms, including burlesque and ensemble references. The outcome are vastly different from the 90s pop style of short shirts and baggy pants, and urban dance moves that were popular earlier.

But certain observers are convinced with this showgirl revival. An ex-showgirl, a ex- Jubilee! showgirl who danced in the 00s says the trend is “confusing”. She thinks the word term is being “used as an broad label encompassing everything from The Radio City Rockettes to Broadway performers and now seemingly modern pop stars.”

The Highly Sought-After Classic Look

For millennial and modern stars, Mackie’s retro designs have become incredibly sought-after. In 2024, Zendaya paid tribute to one of Mackie’s earliest clients, Cher, when the star wore a translucent beaded dress created by the designer in 2001, which was inspired by one he designed for Cher to wear in 1967. Months after, a singer paid an undisclosed sum to buy the Mackie beaded mini dress she had worn earlier in the year to perform at the Grammys. In September, the singer wore a trio of classic Mackie designs at the MTV Video Music Awards. They are also a favorite among fashion collectors.

“Showgirls evoke fond memories for a historical elegance,” says a historian, head of special collections at the a Las Vegas university, who studies the legacy of showgirls. “Currently it is viewed as a sort of ‘toned-down’ sexy because it has been updated. It has got all the elegance, the crystals and the glitter but without the exposure.”

More Than Just Style: An Symbol of Las Vegas

The expert says the showgirl image are integral to the identity of Vegas. She points to one-time leader Oscar Goodman who, during official events, was accompanied by two showgirls. Although Las Vegas no longer has any traditional showgirl productions, Jung says they are still employed as an symbol of the city, being present at gatherings and in marketing. “The showgirl is still a lasting symbol of Las Vegas glamour,” Chung says.

The Appeal of Escape

The former showgirl says the magical transformation of a showgirl is part of the attraction. This is a notion Swift alludes to in a latest docuseries that captures the backstage action from her massive 2023 Eras tour, which included gruelling preparations, workouts and numerous concerts across dozens of cities, each lasting 3.5 hours.

The performer recalls her own stage routines as “like completing an endurance race in heels every night”. Her feathered headdress was 34lbs. “I had to wear it all the way up the steps to the performance area from the backstage area three floors below in the underground. I had to start early for my moment so I could rest before I performed. You are perspiring the whole time but creating this image that it’s effortless and gorgeous and dreamlike.”

Perhaps this is where the fascination of the showgirl fantasy really resides. In the busyness of 2025 there is a longing for fantasy. What better figure to turn to than such icons, who have always embodied fantasy, idealism and a universe where nobody makes a mistake.
