Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to challenge particular rulings from the chair umpire, following the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
